America's First Gay and Lesbian Town

Since the 1930s the gay men and women of New York City have been making Fire Island into the gay beach haven it is today. The 32 mile long by half mile wide strip of beaches and dunes has an official population of only about 300, but hosts thousands of visitors on any given sunny weekend. Hotspots on the island are the Pines and Cherry Grove.

Summer season on Fire Island, bookended by Memorial Day and Labor Day, is often eventful. Expect thrills, spills and plenty of parties that dont stop until the sun rises over the Atlantic.

Everything Just a Short Walk Away

Don't expect uber - or even roads - on fire island. The communities are navigated by a series of wooden pedestrian boardwalks, which connect the pines harbour with the few hundred houses scattered along this narrow spit opf land between the Great South Bay and the Atlantic ocean.

The Sayville Ferry arrives in to fire island pines, and a water Taxi connects the pines with Cherry grove to the Southwest. For an adventurous trip through dunes and scrub one can walk between the Pines and Cherry Grove along the Judy Garland Memorial Trail - also known as "The Meat Rack"

Pines Party, and More

Fire Island Pines is host to several events each year, but nothing compares to the iconic Pines Party. Akin to an enormous nightclub right on the beach - Pines party builds momentum with tea dances and gatehrings all weekend, leading to its crescendo on Saturday night. Produced by the Pines Foundation, this fundraising event has been going strong since 1999. The unique culture and beauty of the island make this event truly magical, yet impossible to describe... You must experience it for yourself!
